The converter
The currency converter sits at the top of the homepage and on every pair page.
- Amount field - Type any number. The label above the field changes based on your user mode (e.g. "How much are you taking?" in Travel mode, "Position size" in Trader mode).
- Quick-convert buttons - Below the amount field, preset buttons let you tap common amounts. These change per user mode.
- Currency selectors - On mobile, tapping a currency selector opens a searchable bottom sheet with recently used currencies at the top. On desktop, use the dropdown or start typing to filter.
- Swap button - The ⇄ button between the two currency selectors swaps them instantly. You can also press S on your keyboard.
- Auto-convert - The converter updates automatically as you type. No need to press a button.
Rate context and verdict
After converting, you will see contextual information about the current rate:
- Rate verdict - A plain-English assessment of whether today's rate is good, average, or below average compared to the last 30 days. The wording changes based on your user mode (e.g. Travel mode says "Great rate for your trip!" while Trader mode shows the percentile position in the 30-day range).
- 30-day range bar - A visual bar showing where today's rate sits between the monthly high and low.
- Rate statistics - Today's rate, 7 days ago, 30 days ago, month high, and month low.
Charts and historical data
The interactive chart lets you explore exchange rate history across multiple timeframes:
- Timeframes - Toggle between 7 days, 30 days, and 1 year views
- Hover for details - Move your cursor over the chart to see the exact rate on any date
- Date picker - Use the historical date picker to look up the rate on any specific date. Useful for invoicing, accounting, or curiosity.
Charts are built from our data sources. Short ranges show more frequent observations; longer ranges use daily values. For full details, see our Methodology page.
Provider fee comparison
Below the converter, you will see estimated costs across different providers - showing not just the headline fee, but the actual exchange rate markup and the final amount received.
This matters because a provider advertising "zero fees" can still charge you more if their exchange rate includes a wide markup.
The providers shown change based on your user mode. Travel mode emphasises card-abroad options. Money Transfers mode shows all major remittance services. Business mode shows bank wire and business-tier options. Real Estate mode highlights specialist FX brokers.
For our full comparison methodology, see our Methodology page.
Bank markup calculator
Found below the provider comparison table, the bank markup calculator lets you enter the rate your bank quoted you, and instantly see:
- The percentage markup over the mid-market rate
- The actual cost of the markup in your source currency
This helps you understand the hidden cost of your bank's exchange rate and decide whether to look for a better deal.
Pair pages and currency hubs
ExchangeRates.com has over 700 dedicated pair pages (e.g. EUR to USD) and 27 currency hub pages (e.g. USD Hub).
- Pair pages - Dedicated converter, chart, conversion tables, and context for a specific currency pair. Great for bookmarking your most-used pair.
- Currency hubs - Overview of a single currency with conversion rates against all other supported currencies, historical trends, and market context.
Dark mode and display settings
The controls at the bottom of every page let you customise your viewing experience:
- ☾ Dark mode - Toggle between light and dark themes. Automatically detects your system preference on first visit. Press D on your keyboard to toggle. Your choice is saved.
- A+ / A− - Increase or decrease the font size for easier reading. Your preference is saved across sessions.
- ◐ High contrast - Toggle high-contrast mode for improved visibility. Useful for bright environments or accessibility needs.
- Language - Switch between English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Market hours
Foreign exchange markets trade throughout the business week but are largely closed on weekends. The site detects your timezone and shows you:
- Whether the nearest major market is currently open or closed
- A "Weekend rates" banner when markets are closed over the weekend
- Market session indicators when Trader mode is active
When markets are closed, the rates shown are the last available close - useful as a reference, but not a live quote.
Contextual tips
When you have been idle on the page for a while, a helpful tip may appear as a toast notification at the bottom of the screen.
These tips are tailored to your current user mode:
- Travel - Tips about Dynamic Currency Conversion, ATM advice, and destination-specific information
- Money Transfers - Advice on comparing total transfer costs and rate alerts
- Business - Reminders about using bank transaction rates for tax reporting and rate timestamps for invoices
- Real Estate - How rate movements affect large amounts and tips on getting quotes from multiple brokers
- Trader - Keyboard shortcuts, liquidity windows, and market microstructure tips
Voice input
On supported browsers (Chrome, Edge, Safari), a microphone icon appears next to the amount field. Tap it and speak an amount - for example, "five hundred" or "ten thousand" - and it will be entered into the converter automatically.
Rate alerts and email digests
On the homepage converter, you can:
- Subscribe to a daily rate digest - Enter your email to receive the current rate for your selected pair every morning
- Set a rate alert - Choose a target rate and direction (above or below), and we will email you when the rate hits your target
No account needed - just your email address.
